3 WAYS: CHECKS

Checks are big this autumn. And this is good news for us mamas as I’ve always felt checks encapsulate an element of effortless chic; the holy grail of post-child dressing. Plus they’re a step onwards and upwards from mama’s-wearing-Breton-stripes, again. Checks got me by the throat when I first saw this now out-of-stock Ganni number trickle through the fashion blogs. It was that heartfelt moment of “I want! Now!”. Blame Celine and Stella McCartney too – this plaid-intarsia sweater is another blogger favourite and on my fantasy wishlist. So I’ve been thinking about ways to bring checks into my life.

The Coat
The most obvious was with a winter coat. I couldn’t find an actual Ganni dupe, but when I came across this oversized check piece from Next in muted autumnal mauves and grey, I knew it was the one. And for just £75? No complaints there. The oversized trend equals warm and cosy and this has a double-breasted front which means for the first time in years I don’t need to worry about forgetting a scarf. For me, wearing oversized on top generally means skinnies and a little heel on the bottom. Next coat, £75

The Dress
This is where checks bleed into tartan, another of autumn’s big trends thanks to the grunge thing going on right now. Now tartan isn’t for everyone, but I think a one-off trend piece like this dress can be quite fun. OK, at less than £20, this is probably not an investment piece, but I was quite surprised at how much I liked wearing something so statement and eye-catching. Give it a go? OMG Fashion dress, £14

The Shirt
A shirt tied around the waist is an easy way to give grunge and checks a little knowing nod. And I love how it looks with faded denim. This shirt is a really old Topshop one but there are loads around at the moment – if you want to wear the shirt as well then buttoning up right to the top is the way to go. Such a cute look with boyfriends – forgive me for mentioning the ones I’m wearing in the photo, but I have tell you; these are the latest version of Levi’s 501s, and I have never worn such a perfect pair. Worth foregoing another pair of stretchy skinnies any day! Topshop check shirts, prices vary
