5 Things Dolly Parton has taught me about being a woman in business

1
Despite being born ”dirt poor” to a tobacco farmer in The Smoky Mountains, Tennessee, Parton went on to be the most honoured female country performer of all time. This Rhinestoned role-model is also an actress, philanthropist and business woman. A business woman worth an estimated $500 million. Here are the top 5 things that we can take from Ms Parton’s success story and motivate every woman in business.

#1 ”Storms make trees take deeper roots”

Not everything in business can be smooth running. Sometimes that project you worked so passionately

on may fall through or the contract you wanted to win may slip through your fingers. But what is left after disappointment is motivation to succeed next time round. Pick yourself up, dust yourself down and most importantly learn from your mistakes.

#2 ”You can be rich in spirit, kindness, love and all those things you can’t put on a dollar sign”

It is an important lesson to learn that the job you work hard at is not just a pay cheque. You must spend everyday feeling like you contribute towards something amazing and you are valued by your

colleagues.

#3 ”You’ll never do a whole lot unless you’re brave enough to try”

I am the first to admit that not all risks pay off! Within Marketing, sometimes your creativity can lead you astray resulting in numerous attempts at getting the brief right! Be bold, be brave or go home.

#4 ”Above everything else I’ve done, I’ve always said I’ve had more guts that I’ve got talent”

To be talented at something, whether you are a superstar singer or intelligent coder, is a blessing. However, talent is wasted if the person doesn’t have

the guts to use it! I am surrounded by talented women and have had the pleasure to be mentored by many throughout my education and professional career. But the true stars that shine through are the ones that have the guts to lead others and inspire! Be gutsy and brave and you will find that talent often follows!

#5 ”I’m not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I’m not dumb…and also know that I’m not blonde.”

Need I say more? To all the strong, independent women out there…go get em’!
