Family in recovery

Selfish mother post

When my husband of nine years broke down and told me he was addicted to prescription drugs I was beyond shocked. He is sensible. I am a twat. He is grounded. I am somewhat up in the air. He is by the book, a stickler for the rules. I am the rule breaker. He just doesn’t do ‘things like this’. He doesn’t look like an addict. And that is where I will stop. What does an addict look like? To me, an addict is the drunk on a park bench, a down-and-out type shooting up — it’s not a health professional with a wife and kids

Amongst all the support out there for the addict… who helps the family? A lot of addicts hit rock bottom and lose their jobs, partner or family. This is not the case for all. We are a family living in recovery. It’s incredibly hard and every day is a struggle. A recovering addict is taught to be selfish. They are told to look out for themselves in order to remain clean. As a wife, a mother and a support to an addict, every single day comes with new challenges, new emotions and new battles to

I have decided to post about our experience of rehab and living sober with kids and a doodle in tow. I hope that others living in recovery will read and recognise themselves and, ultimately, have their feelings validated. I hope that it will help them to be strong and move forward.  I guess my ultimate goal would be to set up a support group for the mummas and papas who are supporting a loved one in recovery while trying to raise strong, courageous mini humans.
